Last year, when my final football-playing son’s high school career ended, I wrote a column Fears of a Football Dad, expressing my mixed feelings at seeing something my son loved so much end, combined with my relief that all of my boys had finished playing this violent sport without suffering serious injury.
Unfortunately, Eddie Canales wasn’t so lucky. After watching his son and another player sustain life-altering injuries on the football field, he founded Gridiron Heroes, a non-profit devoted to helping families of athletes who have suffered spinal cord injuries. Eddie was nominated as a CNN Hero and now has made it to the top 10. The winner receives $250,000 to help their cause. You can vote for Eddie here and help him in his mission to selflessly help others who need it.
