Wouldn’t it be nice if coaches studied?

We hear from so many soccer leagues that rely on hundreds of volunteer coaches in their rec soccer program to take online courses or study extensive curriculum designed to create thorough, “progressive” practice sessions. Some may actually do it. But we know that many, maybe most, do not. It is all they can do to find enough time to get to practice after cutting out of work early. What do those folks do at the field? They typically end up just dividing the team into two and scrimmaging. That’s why we designed CoachDeck. The handy deck of cards with 52 good, fundamental drills designed by an A-Licensed coach not only make running a great practice a snap, but since each drill can be made into a fun game, the kids love every minute. It’s a great way for organizations to show appreciation to hard-working volunteers.

  1. Coaches are an extension of teachers in the classroom. Those who invest time and effort into coaching education, provide kids with a great learning experience. At coaching courses games/activities/exercise take precedent to lines, laps and lectures. In addition, learning appropriate language is constantly reinforced.

    Grassroot coaches need help, very difficult to have a full time job and effectively coach teams. Introductory courses help, but the age and stage of development changes.

    • Yes, we’re firm believers in clinics, classes; the more education the better. What we have learned in doing this for 10 years, however, is that we who run the leagues have much more invested than, say, a dad who got roped into coaching because no one else would do it. We often don’t understand that those people, who make up a large percentage of the coaching ranks, just want something quick and easy-to-use and if it can also be fun, all the better. We don’t feel CoachDeck should be a replacement for existing coaching education programs, but every coach from the most motivated to the least will benefit from having the deck of cards either as a back-up or a primary guide.
