Helicopter Parent or Hipster Parent?

That’s the question posed by Christine Rosen in Commentary Magazine nearly ten years ago entitled, The Parents Who Don’t Want to Be Adults. Interesting read for all new parents. She asserts, “The self-esteem generation is raising its children by looking in the mirror.”

  1. Self-esteem is a lie. We should measure our worth by our roles in society, and we should evaluate those by honest feedback – honest meaning as much negative as positive.

Our parents considered themselves good people by how well they delivered on the expectations set by society. Certainly not by whether they thought they inflicted trauma on their children. Trauma was understood to be a non-negotiable in life – you got as much of it as was handed out and made no recriminations. Some of it was valuable but none of it was unjust.
